Properties of Matter. Matter  Matter is anything that has volume and mass and takes up space.
What is a Property? A property is a characteristic that describes an object or a substance. All matter can be described based on its physical properties.
A Physical Property is a property that can be observed without changing the make up of the substance. You just look at it - or measure it. Examples are:

How would you describe a lemon to someone who had never seen one?

Did you say anything about… Color Texture Taste Hardness Size Acidity (pH) Burns eyes

You use the properties of an object to describe it. All matter has Chemical and Physical Properties.

Copy the chart below into your own journal Copy the chart below into your own journal. Record you observations of the lemon. Properties Before lab After lab Color Shape Length Mass

Physical Properties Can be measured or observed without changing the identity of the object.

Example of Physical Properties… Color Shape Length Volume Mass Density

Density is a measure of something’s mass in proportion to it’s volume.

Density = Mass/Volume Mass Volume

Things that are more dense have more mass per unit of volume than other things.

Chemical Properties are … Based on how a substance reacts to other types of matter.

Examples of Chemical Properties… Flammable Reacts with Oxygen Reacts with Light Reacts with Water
