COMMUNITY PROFILE Grey, Bruce, Huron, Perth (GBHP) In partnership with Statistics Canada

Population is growing but slowly Region is older than the province overall and its youth population is growing slowly Strong growth of the Aboriginal community Few immigrants settle in the region Community Profile Highlights Highlights in GBHP (2001 to 2006):

Population Growth Slow There were 291,429 people living in GBHP, accounting for 2.4% of all Ontarians

Population Growth Slow GBHP grew by 5,088 people between 2001 and 2006 (1.8%), which is an increase from the previous 5-year period (0.2%) but still lower than the province as a whole (6.6%)

GBHP is older than the rest of the province 17.6% of the regions residents are seniors More seniors live alone across GBHP – especially in Perth, where 3 in 10 seniors live on their own In Grey, close to 1 in 5 people are 65 and over Bruce is aging faster than the rest of GBHP and has the highest median age at 45 years Older Population

Youth Population Growth Ages The youth population in GBHP grew by 725 individuals, which represents an increase of 1.6%

Strong Growth in Aboriginal Community GBHPs Aboriginal community grew by 955 (27.2%) Aboriginal people total 4,470 in the region, accounting for 1.5% of the total population Nearly half reside in Bruce and close to one third reside in Grey In Bruce, the third highest reported mother tongue other than English or French is Ojibway

Few Immigrants Settle in GBHP Between 2001 and 2006, only 1,820 out of 580,740 newcomers to Ontario settled in GBHP While more than one in four Ontario residents reported being foreign-born, less than one in ten (24,685 people) GBHP residents were born outside Canada The period before 1961 accounted for the highest number of immigrants to the region Ninety-two per cent of residents reported English as their mother tongue, much higher than the province as a whole
