The Allies Turn the Tide Chapter 14 Section 3

I. All-Out War Allies commit to total war. Propaganda, censorship, and the internment of Japanese U.S. citizens. The role of women: factory workers, pilots, nurses, spies and decoders.

II. Allies Forge Ahead U.S. vs Japan: Battle of the Coral Sea (May 1942) Battle of Midway (June 1942) Both fought entirely from the air- first time enemy ships never actually saw each other. Both U.S. victories- stopped Japanese offensive in the Pacific.

The Big Three Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin- in Tehran, Iran Totally distrusted each other Stalin wanted other 2 to open another front against Germany, but they didn’t have the resources.

Allied Victories in North Africa El Alamein- 1942: Allies stopped Rommel’s advances, and later trapped them in Tunisia in 1943. U.S. led by Gen. Eisenhower.

Allies invade Italy Allies take 18 months to penetrate Italy. Italians overthrow Mussolini, but fighting continues. Weakened Hitler by putting him on another front.

Mussolini’s Public Death

Battle of Stalingrad- 1942 Costliest battle of WWII Stalingrad: oil-rich; Stalin’s name-sake A fierce street by street, house by house battle. Jan. 1943- Germans surrender- most are driven out of the USSR, some remain POWs for 10 years.

D-Day: The Allied Invasion of France “Operation Overlord”: June 6, 1944- Normandy Beach in Northern France. One of the most difficult military missions in history. At dawn, 156,000 Allied troops crossed the English channel and fought across the beach into enemy territory.

Images of D-Day

Liberation of France More allied forces sailed in from Italy, and French forces fought occupying Germans inside Paris. Aug. 25, 1944: Allies enter Paris. Within 1 month, France was free.

Weakening Germany Germany was already weakened from round the clock bombings. Hamburg and Dresden Allies advanced into Belgium, and Germany launches a massive counterattack. Battle of the Bulge: lasted more than a month- both sides took heavy losses. Meanwhile, Soviet forces closed in on Berlin from the east.

Yalta Conference February 1945: Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin meet again. Stalin wanted to control Eastern Europe. Churchill, Roosevelt want self-determination for Eastern Europe, but need Stalin’s help to win the war.

Yalta Conference Agreed that the USSR would enter war against Japan after Germany’s surrender. They would split Germany into 4 zones, to be governed by American, French, British, and Soviet forces.
