Presentation transcript:

A man lives on the top floor of a skyscraper A man lives on the top floor of a skyscraper. Every morning he gets the lift down to the ground floor. Every evening when he returns home he gets the lift halfway up and then walks the rest of the way. Why is this? A man is walking down a back street dressed head to toe in black. He has black glasses and a black balaclava. The street lamps aren’t working and a black car with its lights off is coming straight at him. The car managed to stop just in time. How did the driver see the man? A woman walks into a pub and says ‘Could I have a glass of water please?’ The barman pulls out a gun and points it straight at the woman. ‘Thank you’ she says, and leaves the pub. Why? He is vertically challenged It was daytime She had hiccups and he tried to shock her in order to cure her. 1.2.2 Thinking creatively 1.2.2 Thinking creatively

Thinking creatively Creativity allows an individual to look at ideas from new perspectives. In terms of a new business this might allow for inventions (creating brand new products) and innovations (adapting existing products). Creative thinking is the process used to come up with these ideas. Creative thinking can be accidental, when you stumble across a good idea. Deliberate creative thinking is the process that a business will use to develop ideas within its workforce. This speeds up idea generation and the development of the idea. New ideas and their development can give a business a competitive advantage if it can continually come up with new products and processes. 1.2.2 Thinking creatively

Thinking creatively… How would life be different if there were no electricity? List three different ways. Explain a flower to someone who has never seen or heard of one before. Write a story about the zoo without using the names of any animals. You can have any three things that you want. In return you must give away three things that are about the same size as the things you get. What do you get and what do you give away? What are some ways you could celebrate "Backwards Day?" Are you more like a square or a circle? Why? 1.2.2 Thinking creatively

Thinking creatively - brainstorming Brain storming is a process that allows a group to come up with and develop ideas. How does the group brainstorm? Think of the problem Ask people for ideas to solve the problem Encourage every idea – even the wildest Go for quantity of ideas, not quality Build on each other’s ideas All people have valid ideas – NEVER put down other people’s ideas 1.2.2 Thinking creatively

Thinking creatively – your turn 1. The problem: Your school or college is looking to run a charity event. 2. In small groups ask people for ideas to solve the problem 3. Get one person to write down all of the ideas. Encourage every idea – even the wildest 4. Go for quantity of ideas, not quality 5. Now start building on each other’s ideas. Are you starting to make progress? 1.2.2 Thinking creatively

Thinking creatively – de bono’s six hats Edward de Bono’s ‘Six Thinking Hats’ is an example of creative thinking. It is used to generate ideas and can aid to decision making. Each coloured hat signifies the thinking pattern of a member of the group: White – state the facts, what information is available Black – negative aspects, why the idea won’t succeed Red – state the emotion, ‘gut instinct’ Green – creative ideas, new concepts might we come up with Yellow – positive aspects, why will it succeed? Blue – summary, managing the other hats so that the process is beneficial to the project 1.2.2 Thinking creatively

Thinking creatively – lateral thinking Lateral thinking is another term for thinking creatively or ‘outside the box’. It requires individuals and groups to leave behind traditional ideas and come up with brand new concepts – discard obvious thoughts and think differently. Businesses place a premium on employees who can think laterally, particularly in creative industries such as advertising. 1.2.2 Thinking creatively
