Bell Ringer (FEB 21) Quick Write – Animals and people do not make their own food. So explain how energy from the Sun gets to people and animals.

Cellular Respiration (Page 103) Essential Question How is the process of photosynthesis related to the process of cellular respiration?

Plants get their food from photosynthesis How does an organism get energy from food? Plants get their food from photosynthesis Animals (and people) get their food from eating plants, animals, or both.

Why do organisms need energy? To carry out the basic functions for the organism (to grow, to move, to reproduce, to heal/replace injured parts, to digest food, etc.)

1 - How do organisms get energy from food? **Cellular respiration – the process of breaking down food to produce energy.

*Takes place in the mitochondria of the cell

*The cells take in food (glucose) and oxygen (the reactants) Mitochondria

*The oxygen breaks up the glucose, releasing energy stored from the plant Mitochondria

*As the cells produce energy (ATP), the cells release carbon dioxide and water (products.) Mitochondria

People (and animals) breathe out the CO² and eliminate excess water by sweating or urinating Mitochondria

2 - How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration related? *The products from one process are used as the reactants for the other process.
