ESI-R Developmental Screening Developmental screening is a brief assessment designed to identify children who may need further evaluation. The screening helps identify children who may need assistance to perform successfully in school and enables teachers to seek assistance for interventions sooner. It is NOT a readiness or skills assessment, nor an IQ test, nor an entrance exam. ESI-R takes about 15-20 minutes per student to administer. Completed within 45 days of enrollment. Time 5 minutes DoDEA Sure Start Programs use the Early Screening Inventory-Revised as the developmental screening tool to identify children who may need further evaluation. **Please note that the CSC process at your school will probably require additional documentation before a referral can be made. If you have a student who may need help your first partner may be the PSCD teacher at your school to suggests interventions to try. If in doubt ask your CSC chair for the school’s process.**

Overview of the Early Screening Inventory-Revised Let’s Look at the ESI-R Overview of the Early Screening Inventory-Revised Time 20 minutes View the video and allow for questions at the end.

Getting Started Establishing rapport is important  Pick a location Screening Time Using the Score Sheet Computing Rounded Age Completing the Score Sheet Time: 5 minutes The goal is to obtain optimal child performance. It’s important that the child is at ease. Don’t refer to this as a test, say you are going to play some games together. Location is not specific but should be in a quiet environment without distractions if possible. The screening usually takes about 15-20 minutes The sequence should be in the order it occurs in the manual Instructions may be repeated except where otherwise noted If a child refuses, the item can be re-administered later in the session. If this occurs it should be noted Using the Score sheet Computing rounded age: refer to page 11-12 in Examiner’s Manual- allow reading time and discuss questions Completing the score sheet: refer to page 13

Administering the ESI-P & ESI-K Practice Time 40 mins Participants will need the ESI-R Examiner’s Manual and the materials from the kit to practice with one another. Each participant team will need one set of handouts: LaMarr sample scoring- please review the scored handout and discuss how to notate and score. ESI-P blank form ESI-K blank form Parent Questionnaire (sample) ESI-R Examiner’s Manual Materials (blocks, ball, button, etc) Allow participants to practice administration of the ESI-P & ESI-K One participant can administer the ESI-P and switch roles for the ESI-K
