World War I Propaganda Posters

What is Propaganda? Propaganda: form of communication aimed towards influencing the attitude of a population toward some cause or position. Selective facts Loaded messages for emotion Before WWI, propaganda was neutral and generally positive. Elections Report crimes After WWI, propaganda was seen as negative.

WWI History First large-scale and organized propagation effort was during WWI. Originally started by Germany and Britain to… Give reasons to their cause Citizens to volunteer Demonize the enemy Britain did a better job than Germany on propaganda because of quality and ability to sway the public. Britain used different types of propaganda including… Books Pamphlets Speeches Posters Distributed to other countries particularly the U.S. Posters were mainly about recruitment, but atrocity stories became popular as well. U.S. created something similar to Britain propaganda even before we entered the war. U.S. also included propaganda for entering the war on the British side.

What’s Happening Today? In Class Given “War Poster Analysis” handout with a propaganda poster. Work on this individually for 5-10 minutes. Find your partner with the same propaganda poster and compare your analysis. Work on this for 5 minutes. One person from each pair share their propaganda poster and a brief summary on their poster. Propaganda posters will also be on the Smartboard. Homework Create your own propaganda poster (collage or drawing). Choose a poster on one of the following topics...
