Damage Control

Class Objectives Identify the purpose of Damage Control. Identify the meaning of Watertight Integrity. Identify the procedures to open and close watertight doors. Identify Material Conditions of Readiness, including Damage Control Emergencies and Alarms. Identify the meaning of General Quarters.

Damage Control is an ALL HANDS responsibility! Importance USS Stark Damage Control is an ALL HANDS responsibility!

Purpose of Damage Control Take all practical preliminary measures to prevent damage. Minimize and localize damage as it occurs. Accomplish emergency repairs as quickly as possible, restore equipment to operation, and care for injured personnel. The ships ability to perform it’s mission will depend on Damage Control effectiveness!

Watertight Integrity A ships ability to resist flooding.

Watertight Integrity Decks Frames Relation to Centerline 1 2 3 4 5 6 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 7 Established when the ship was built: Decks Frames Relation to Centerline 03 02 01 1 Main deck 2 3 4 5 6

Watertight Integrity Enemy Action Storm Damage Collision Stranding May be reduced or destroyed through: Enemy Action Storm Damage Collision Stranding Negligence

Watertight Doors To Open To Close Loosen & remove dogs on hinge side Purpose: To maintain Watertight Integrity To Open Loosen & remove dogs on hinge side Remove dogs on wedges Release pressure on door To Close Set all dogs opposite the hinges Set dogs on hinge side, then remaining dogs Tighten in same sequence with a wrench

Types of Watertight Doors Watertight doors with individual dogs.

Types of Watertight Doors Quick-acting Watertight Door

Types of Watertight Doors Bolted Hatch with Escape Scuttle

Material Conditions of Readiness Purpose: Provides different degree of water-tightness and protection for the ship Has three degrees of readiness: X Y Z

X X-Ray Classification Provides least amount of protection. Condition set in well protected harbors. Condition set at home during normal working hours.

Y Yoke Classification Offers moderate amount of protection. Condition set at sea. Condition set in port outside of regular working hours.

Z Zebra Classification Provides maximum protection during battle. Condition set for fire or flooding. Condition set when entering or leaving port in wartime. All open watertight doors must be guarded. Z

Damage Control Classifications Special use classification for specific fittings on the ship: Six different classifications: W W Y D Z Z X

Circle William Classification Applied to ventilation fittings and certain access openings. Normally open in all material conditions. Closed only to prevent Chemical, Biological, or Radiological (CBR) contamination. W

William Classification Applied to sea suction valves that supply water to condensers, fire pumps, and other equipment necessary for fire protection and mobility. Normally open and running. W

Circle X-Ray/Yoke Classification Permits access to battle stations. Used for transfer of ammunition or are part of other vital systems. May be opened without special permission. Must be closed when not in use. X Y

Circle Zebra Classification May be opened during general quarters to allow preparation and distribution of food. Used for cooling vital spaces. Guards must be posted when open for quick closing. Z

Dog Zebra Classification Applied to accesses on weather decks that are not equipped with light traps or door switches that turn off lights during darkened ship conditions.

Damage Control Emergencies Flooding Fire

Ships Emergency Alarms General Chemical Collision

General Quarters Actions: All combat stations are manned. Purpose: Set conditions of the ship to full readiness for battle. Actions: All combat stations are manned. Material Condition of Readiness set to ZEBRA. All repair parties are manned.

Summary Identify the purpose of Damage Control. Identify the meaning of Watertight Integrity. Identify the procedures to open and close watertight doors. Identify Material Conditions of Readiness, including Damage Control Emergencies and Alarms. Identify the meaning of General Quarters.
