Pay close attention to the order of information, punctuation, and spacing.

Types of Sources: Books Basic Format Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. Example Gleick, James. Chaos: Making a New Science. New York: Penguin, 1987. Print. NOTE: Types of books are subdivided. For example: Books with more than one author, Books with no author, Editions, Etc.

Types of Sources: Periodicals Basic Format Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Medium of publication. Example Poniewozik, James. "TV Makes a Too-Close Call." Time 20 Nov. 2000: 70-71. Print. NOTE: Types of periodicals are subdivided. For example: Magazine article, Editorials, Newspaper articles, etc.

Types of Sources: Electronic Basic Format Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version number. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access. [URL-optional]. Example The Purdue OWL Family of Sites. The Writing Lab and OWL at Purdue and Purdue U, 2008. Web. 23 April 2008.

Types of Sources: Other Basic Format Personal Interviews Name of the interviewee. Personal interview. Date of the interview. Example Purdue, Pete. Personal interview. 1 Dec. 2000. NOTE: Look up other types of sources by type.

Steps to Compiling a Works Cited Page [1 of 2] Gather source cards throughout discovery process For each source in turn determine main source type Locate the Main Source Type in Table of Contents of The MLA Handbook Examine details on source card to determine subtype of source Locate sub source type in Table of Contents of MLA Handbook.

Steps to Compiling a Works Cited Page [2 of 2] Substitute the information from your source into the model entry Format all of the entries Alphabetize the entries Format the page according to the general format instructions.

General Formatting Work Cited Page Begin on a separate page at the end of your research paper. One-inch margins Paper Header (Last Name page at upper right) Words Works Cited at the top center of the page Double space throughout Indent all lines after first for each entry Alphabetized by first information in the entry
