About the Author S. E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders when she was just 15 years old. The book is fiction, but it was inspired by real life events that Hinton witnessed in her high school. S. E. stands for Susan Eloise. She wrote using her initials because, at that time, it was hard for female authors to get published especially when they were writing about male protagonists.
Synopsis/Plot The story is told through the viewpoint of 14 year old Ponyboy Curtis The plot focuses on the external conflict between two rival gangs, the Greasers and the Socs, and the damage their rivalry causes.
