The Atom CHAPTER 26
The Atom An Atom is the smallest part of an element which has the properties of that element.
Name of particle Situated Relative Mass Charge Structure of the Atom Sub Atomic Particles The atom is made up of three sub-atomic particles, the proton the neutron and the electron. Name of particle Situated Relative Mass Charge Proton Nucleus 1 amu + 1 Neutron Nucleus 1 amu 0 Electron Electron cloud 1/1840 -1
The Proton and the Neutron are found in the nucleus of the atom and the electrons are located in the electron cloud surrounding the nucleus. The electron is much smaller than the proton or neutron
What makes atoms different? Each atom is different because each atom has its own number of protons in its nucleus. The atomic number of an atom is the number of Protons in the nucleus of the atom.
From the information given we can draw an atom. The atom of aluminium has: 13 Protons and 13 electrons(from the atomic number) 27 - 13 = 14 Neutrons(Mass number - atomic number)
Draw an atom of Carbon
Draw an atom of Argon
Isotopes Isotopes are atoms of the same element, which have different numbers of neutrons. Examples of Isotopes are:
