Emergency exits Exit: That portion of a means of egress that is separated from all other spaces of the building or structure by construction, location or other equipment as required to provide a protected way of travel to the exit discharge. (NFPA 101) Exit access: That portion of a means egress that leads to an exit. Exit discharge: That portion of a means of egress that leads directly outside or to a street, walkway, refuge area, public way or open space that has access to the outside.

Emergency exits 1. All exit routs must be permanent. 2. An exit must be separated by fire resistant materials. 3. Openings into an exit must be limited. 4. Two exit routs. At least two exit routs must be available in a work place to permit prompt evacuation.

Emergency exits Emergency exits must be illuminated. The letters must be not less than 6” tall and at least ¾” wide. Emergency exit doors must open out and be self closing and never locked. Overhead doors are not to be used as emergency exits. Exit routs must be kept free of obstructions. If the direction of travel to the exit will pass other doors they must be marked “not an exit.” Depression of panic bar must open the exit without prior action.

Exit routs must support the maximum permitted occupant load for each floor served. Exit routs must be at least 28 inches wide at all points. Exit routs must be kept free of explosive or highly flammable furnishings or other decorations. Lighting and markings must be adequate and appropriate. Exit routs must be maintained during construction.

Emergency action plans Emergency action plan must be kept in writing, kept in workplace, and available to employees for review. However, an employer with 10 or fewer employees may communicate the plan orally to employees. Emergency action plans

Procedures for emergency evacuation, including type of evacuation and exit route assignments. 3. Procedures to be followed by employees who remain to operate critical plant operations before evacuating. 4. Procedures to account for all employees after evacuation. 5. Procedures to be followed by employees performing rescue or first aid. 6. The name of employee who may be contacted for more information about the plan or duties.

Employee alarm system An employer must have and maintain an employee alarm system. The employee alarm system must use a distinctive signal for each purpose.

Training Employer must designate and train employees to assist in the safe and orderly evacuation of other employees. An employer must review the emergency action plan with each employee covered by the plan.

Minimum elements of a fire prevention plan 1. A fire prevention plan must include: A list of all major fire hazards Proper handling and storage procedures for hazardous materials. Potential ignition sources and their control The type of fire protection equipment necessary to control each major hazard. 2. Procedures to control accumulations of flammable and combustible waste materials. 3. Procedures for regular maintenance of safeguards to prevent the accidental ignition of materials.
