Physical Science Chapter 9 – Section 2 Energy Conversions Physical Science Chapter 9 – Section 2

What is an energy conversion? Energy Conversion – a change from one form of energy to another Any form of energy can change into any other form of energy

Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy Look at the animation above. What happens to the potential and kinetic energy levels?

Why do some people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Chemical energy of food is converted into kinetic energy when you are active. It is also converted into thermal energy to maintain body temperature.

Why are energy conversions important? Energy conversions are needed for everything we do. Heating our homes, getting energy from a meal Machines help harness the energy, and make the energy work for you. Electrical energy by itself won’t dry your hair or light up a room

Energy Conversion Example An alarm clock converts electrical energy to sound energy, thermal energy, and light energy Thermal Energy Sound Energy Electrical Energy Light Energy

Draw a flow map showing the flow of energy transformations in a car from starting vehicle to driving. You should have 5 different types of energy.

Energy Transfer Sound (mechanical) Electrical Thermal Mechanical Chemical Electrical Light (Electromagnetic)

Examples Steam Engine Lighting a Match Battery Can you think of More? Complete your graphic organizer to illustrate energy conversions. Draw a picture to represent 2different energy conversions you may encounter in everyday life. Be sure to explain what type of energy it starts with and what type of energy it ends with.
