Nutrition FOOD IS ENERGY FOR OUR BODIES!! Just like a car requires fuel such as petrol the human body Must have an adequate supply of fuel. EL: I understand the role of food and how it affects my growth and development. I understand that I need to eat foods from a variety of sources. I understand that food gives me energy to do all the things I want to do, physically, mentally and emotionally.

DAILY ENERGY REQUIREMENTS Food comes via three important components (Macro nutrients) Carbohydrates Fats Protein These components are the only sources of fuel for humans and are found in varying amounts of different foods.

Carbohydrates 2 main groups of carbohydrates commonly called starches and sugars 1. Complex carbohydrates- starches 2. Simple carbohydrates- Simple sugars Carbohydrates are a great source of energy Complex carbohydrates are a lot healthier. They supply energy but also have vitamins, minerals and fibre. Eg potatoes, rice, bread, pasta and other cereal foods. Simple Sugars offer energy but have fewer vitamins and minerals and little fibre. Examples table sugar and maple syrup. Hidden very well in common food e.g. chocolate, soft drink, ice cream and confectionary These foods are extremely high in energy however this is excess energy not needed by the body and is quickly converted into fat

Fats Fats generally come in 2 forms 1. Saturated and 2.Unsaturated. Fats are important to the body. They provide fuel for daily energy requirements, help insulate and regulate body temperature, protect internal organs against injury and act as shock absorbers around the joints such as the knee Fats generally come in 2 forms 1. Saturated and 2.Unsaturated. Saturated fats are found in large doses in animal products such as meat, cream and cheese. Other examples include butter, chocolate and pies Unsaturated fats include polyunsaturated fats- found in vegetable oil and seeds, sunflower oil, prawns, lobster and walnuts Unsaturated fats are better Excess fat in your diet is not recommended Excess fat can lead to heart disease strokes hypertension various cancers, diabetes and gall bladder

Proteins There are a variety of different chemicals called amino acids that are referred to as protein, which is am essential component of many body parts. They are used to Build muscle tissue To help fight disease Form nails and skin Act as energy source Protein is supplied through animal sources and plant sources e.g milk, meat, fish, eggs, cheese and varies cereals. Protein is rarely used as an energy source body get most energy from carbohydrates and fats.

Other essential requirements Vitamins Minerals Fibre Water- provides good health. Provide transport for body fuels and a source of elimination of body wast. Helps regulate body temperature. Helps prtect teeth from tooth decay
