North Carolina’s Executive Branch

Duties of NC’s Governor Executive: Carries out laws. Appoints non-elected members of Cabinet. Makes executive orders. Economic: Prepares state budget. Obtains grants. Legislative: Delivers State of State Address. Can veto. Calls NCGA into special session. Judicial: Pardons, reprieves & commute sentences of state offenders. Appoints judges to vacancies. Military: Oversees the state militia. Has emergency powers. Ceremonial: Spokesperson for the state. Lives in the Governor’s mansion.

Requirements of NC Governor Must be at least 30 years old. Must be a resident of NC for 2 years. Must be a qualified voter. Must not have been impeached, convicted of malpractice or any other felony. Must be a 5-year US citizen.

NC’s Governor Pat McCrory Elected in 2012 Republican Serves 4-year term Former mayor of Charlotte Running for re-election

NC’s Lt. Governor Dan Forest Elected in 2012 Republican Only 2nd Republican since 1887! Serves 4-year term Is an architect Running for re-election

Duties of the State Treasurer Responsible for receipt, custody, and disbursement of all state funds. Invests state funds. Manages state health plan and retirement plans. Provides financial advice to the Governor and other state institutions, agencies, and offices. Is a member of the Council of State.
