Reconstruction - 1865 to 1877 Reorganizing the Southern states after the Civil War, and readmitting them into the Union. Defining the means by which whites and blacks could live together in a non-slave society

Abraham Lincoln Reconstruction plan calling for reconciliation (forgiveness) 10% Plan – 10% of a state’s population must pledge allegiance to the US to be readmitted into the Union. Preservation of the Union was more important than punishing the South.

Robert E. Lee Urged Southerners to reconcile with Northerners at the end of the war and reunite as Americans when some wanted to continue to fight. Became president of Washington College, which is now known as Washington and Lee University
