Presentation transcript:

Peer-to-Peer Internet Networks Steve Staten, Cevdet Bulut, Seth Raleigh

Peer-to-Peer Networks Created when two or more PCs are connected and share resources without going through a separate server computer Examples: File sharing, telephony, media streaming, discussion forums

Pure P2P No centralized server Control and data are completely distributed Every node is a peer Examples: Gnutella, Freenet, KaZaA

Hybrid P2P Centralized server provides data Communication is directly between peers Example: Napster

Advantages Scalable – system that can adapt easily to increased demands Everyone brings their own resources Robust No central bottleneck No central point of failure

Advantages Less server dependent Reduce Overhead Costs Open multiple source The exact opposite of FTP (single source, single server)

Disadvantages Ease of copyright violations Viruses/Spyware

Business Over 200 companies have invested over $400 million in P2P networks Potential Applications: Search engines E-commerce Joost
