Presentation transcript:

Non-Verbal Communication Nonverbal communication: communication through sending and receiving wordless cues.

Non-Verbal Communication Body Language

Think to yourself What’s the importance of non- verbal communication in an interview, in the workplace, at school….

Non-Verbal Communication Body language is especially meaningful in an interview as your interviewer will be paying as much attention to nonverbal cues as to what you have to say. You want to avoid nervous or bored body language like repeatedly crossing and uncrossing your legs or arms, fiddling with your hair or clothes, continually touching your face, scratching your head. Some positive examples of body language in an interview include leaning forward slightly to show your enthusiasm and nodding whenever is appropriate, particularly when your interviewer is making an important point.

Verbal Communication Voice: Positive: Speak with a clear volume and take care of your pronunciation and rhythm. Provide variety in your intonation and speak in a calm manner. Concentrate on your breathing while speaking. This avoids a hasty impression. Further, avoid filler words, such as ‘yes’,’ uhm’ and ‘so’, and definitely don’t sigh after a question. Use short and simple sentences, finish your sentences and stick to the structure of the job interview. Positive: Always be positive when telling your story. Don’t tell just what went wrong in previous experiences, but also discuss how you solved issues and which lessons you learned while doing so.

Handy Hints for shaking hands

6 Ways to the Perfect Handshake With dry, soft palms With a firm, but not too crushing, grip With your hand approaching from the side, not above as this seems too dominating For three shakes With eye contact and a smile With appropriate follow-up conversation

Interview Tips! Be Prepared Make a Good First Impression Present POSITIVE Body Language Ask Questions Say Thank You! Research the company and use that information in your interview, complete practice interview questions, try on your interview outfit early! We will focus on #2 today! That first impression is SO important! Walking confidently, having a strong handshake, and knowing how to properly introduce yourself. We’ve talked a lot about this one - can we list positive body language? (Sitting up tall, not crossing legs, hands in your lap or on the desk/table, strong eye contact, etc). Just like they are interviewing you, you are also finding out if this company is a good fit for you! Prepare a list of questions you have about the specific job or the company. This shows interest!!! Be polite!!! Say thank you in person and send a thank you letter the next day!
