2 Towards a world-class Australian Curriculum The Australian Curriculum has been written to equip young Australians with the knowledge, understanding and skills that will enable them to engage effectively with, and prosper in, society, to compete in a globalised world and to thrive in the information-rich workplaces of the future. The Australian Curriculum: – has been subject to extensive and sustained consultation during its development – has been benchmarked against curricula of leading nations during the development process – sets challenging standards for each student – does not overload the curriculum – pursues deep learning. 4 By the beginning of 2015 all schools will have fully implemented the Australian Curriculum Phase 1 subjects and will report in these subjects by the end of Semester 1, During 2013, the Curriculum Framework will be replaced by the Western Australian Curriculum and Assessment Outline. SCASA provided a draft outline at the beginning of term 2 for consultation. In Western Australia geography and the remaining F-10 Phase 2 and Phase 3 subjects will only be implemented once the achievement standards, work samples and judging standards support materials are fully developed. The Curriculum Framework/K-10 syllabus can be used to guide curriculum delivery in areas that have not been signed off by the Minister for implementation in WA Key messages August 2013

10 Professional Learning support 2012 Semester 1: Leading the Australian Curriculum 3 day professional learning for each of the Phase 1 subjects of the Australian Curriculum was developed and delivered. This Train the Trainer program for primary schools sought to provide some common messages and resources to support networks and schools as they commenced implementation of these learning areas. June 2012: Secondary HODs days 1 and 2 Semester 2: a centrally funded 4 day regional Train the Trainer course for primary schools in English, history, mathematics and science. 29 TDS model TDSs will provide state-wide support to teachers, schools and networks to: implement the Western Australian curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12; collaborate to improve teaching and learning practices in Kindergarten, Pre-primary and Year classrooms; prepare for the smooth transition of Year 7 students to secondary settings; ensure most students leave school eligible for university or having completed vocational qualifications; and meet the requirements of WACE 2016.
