Weathering

Weathering Weathering is the process that breaks down rock and other substances at Earth’s surface. #10

Weathering Weathering is the breaking apart of rock. #11

Two main types of weathering Mechanical Chemical #12

Mechanical weathering is breaking down rocks by physical force. #13

Mechanical Weathering Ice wedging – This occurs when water fills a crack or pore, expands because it freezes and splits the rock apart.

Mechanical Weathering Exfoliation – Layers of rock that breaks because of pressure from below.

Mechanical Weathering Organisms

3 types of mechanical weathering:#14 1. Ice Wedging 2. Exfoliation 3. Organisms

Chemical weathering is the breakdown of rocks by chemical reactions that change the rocks makeup or composition. #15

Chemical weathering includes #16 (part) dissolution (soluble rocks and minerals dissolve in acidic waters)

Chemical weathering includes #16 (part) hydrolysis (feldspars alter to clay)

Hydrolysis is the chemical weathering that refers to a chemical change to a substance when it interacts with water. #17

Water is the main cause of chemical weathering. #18

Chemical weathering includes #16 (part) oxidation (rusting of iron)

Chemical weathering includes #16 Chemical weathering includes dissolution (soluble rocks and minerals dissolve in acidic waters), hydrolysis (feldspars alter to clay), and oxidation (rusting of iron).

Why is the dirt red on Mars? #19 The dirt on Mars is red because of rust / oxidation. This is an example of chemical weathering.

Acid rain causes rocks to weather much faster than they would naturally. #20
