Introduction to Volume

To find volume imagine slicing the figure into one unit high slices To find volume imagine slicing the figure into one unit high slices. Each slice has a volume equal to the area of the base. Therefore, the volume of the figure shown here is equal to 5 slices of (4 units by 3 units). This makes the volume 60 units cubed.

The formula for volume of a rectangular prism is V = lwh. Example #1: A package of baseball cards measures 1.5 in. by 2.5 in. by 3.5 in. The hobby shop has a display box that measures 21 in. by 12 in. by 5 in. How many packages of baseball cards can the hobby shop display in the box? My verbal model is find the volume of the display box and divide it by the volume of a pack of cards Vbox = lwh V = 21(12)(5) V = 1,260 cubic inches Vcard = lwh V = 1.5(2.5)(3.5) V = 13.125 cubic inches The display box can hold 96 packages of baseball cards.

106 air conditioners can fit inside the delivery truck. Example #2 A delivery truck has the dimensions of 6 ft. by 8 ft. by 10 ft. Air conditioners have the dimensions of 36 in. by 18 in. by 12 inches. How many air conditioners will fit into the delivery truck? Find the volume of the truck and divide it by the volume of an air conditioner. Problem I need to change all units to inches or all to feet. 6 feet = 6(12)= 72 inches 8 ft. = 96 in. 10 ft. = 120 in. Vtruck = lwh V = (72)(96)(120) V = 829,440 in. sq. VAC = lwh V = 36(18)(12) V = 7,776 in. sq. 106 air conditioners can fit inside the delivery truck.
