THE ELICOS INDUSTRY UNCOVERED

ESOS ESOS Act: The Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) framework protects the rights of international students studying in Australia. The National code sets out standards relating to- Singed Agreement Refund Policy Integrity of marketing procedures and materials Complaints & Appeals Processes Student Responsibilities- attendance

The ELICOS National Standards The ELICOS National Standards are the standards that set nationally consistent requirements for ELICOS delivery. TEQSA assesses compliance in regards to : consumer protection student wellbeing delivery of quality English language teaching Academic progress, Intervention strategies for at risk students

CRICOS Registration on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) is required for all providers of education for overseas students as part of the ESOS Act

TEQSA ELICOS courses are accredited by TEQSA the Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency.

Why is our ELICOS industry so regulated?

1980s- economic boom-ELICOS industry was not regulated ELICOS- largest sector of education exports throughout 1988- 1990. Some institutions invested money in real estate Students forwarded pre paid fees to institutions Government crack down on student visas- students were overstaying length of stay condition on student visa 1990’s real estate collapse and institutions went bankrupt and couldn’t reimburse students for their fees Australian government felt obligated to reimburse student fees Surviving institutions wanted to protect reputation and formed regulatory body with Government support National ELICOS Accreditation Scheme ( NEAS) to ensure industry would not be tarnished by shonky operators or cowboys like……..

ELICOS UNCOVERED 2016 Record numbers -Almost half a million international students from nearly two hundred countries studied in Australia in 2015. 10% growth compared to 2014 in all sectors 2016 YTD highest ever numbers for ELICOS sector Ranked 3rd after USA & Canada for ELICOS provision China contributed 27.3 per cent of all international students in Australia, the highest of any nationality International education delivered nearly $20 billion to the Australian economy in 2015
