Cornell Note Taking

The Note-taking Area - RECORD Here you will record all useful information, definitions, and facts from your reading or lecture. Your notes can be in bullet form, pictures, charts/diagrams, or outline form: Big Idea Specific Idea Detail

Cue Column Afterwards review your note-taking section and reduce your notes into key words, vocabulary, headings (or words that have been bolded) and short phrases. If you do notice these keywords as you are taking your notes, you can start to record then. Record any questions you have about what you have read.

Questions – Cue Column Above the Surface Question – these are the types of questions that start with: Who, What, When and Where. Below the Surface Question – these are the types of questions that start with: How or Why. These questions reflect the notes you have taken. You need 1 of each! The answer to your question should be beside it in the note-taking section.

Summary In your own words summarize what you have read using your notes and cue column to guide you with what is important and the order you have read them in. Here you will write 5-7 important things from your notes.
