CONTROL YOUR MIND, CONTROL YOUR LIFE MINDSET: CONTROL YOUR MIND, CONTROL YOUR LIFE

What are Mindsets? Mindset clip Mindsets are beliefs—beliefs about yourself and your most basic qualities. People with a fixed mindset believe that their traits are just givens. They have a certain amount of brains and talent and nothing can change that. If they have a lot, they’re all set, but if they don’t, they’re not set... So people in this mindset worry about their traits and how adequate they are. They have something to prove to themselves and others. People with a growth mindset, on the other hand, see their qualities as things that can be developed through their dedication and effort. Mindset clip

Mindset: Fixed vs. Growth In a fixed mindset, effort is a bad thing… Failure must mean I am not smart, so I will not try. In a growth mindset, effort is good… Failure means I have figured out what doesn’t work, so really I am closer to finding what will work! Fixed: You should not have to try, you should just know. Setbacks mean you are not smart – failures cause you to quit Growth: Effort is good. Setbacks are a natural part of learning, we learn from mistakes. Failure led them to work harder

Ability vs. Effort Dweck’s social experiment Learned Helplessness Praise does not create growth in young minds, success does (Dweck, et. al., date) Dweck clip

The Growth Mindset: INTELLEGENCE CAN BE DEVELOPED Those with a growth mindset: Have a desire to learn & embrace challenges Persist despite failure See effort as a way to master new things Learn from criticism Are inspired by others’ successes

The Fixed Mindset: Intelligence does not change Those with a fixed mindset: Avoid challenges Give up easily See effort as useless Ignore criticism Feel threatened by the success of others - haters Peak early before full potential

Each of these people experienced many Famous Failures Michael Jordan Abraham Lincoln Oprah Winfrey Steve Jobs Albert Einstein Each of these people experienced many failures before they found success…mostly due to a belief they could succeed or a growth mindset

How To Change Your Mindset Step 1: Learn to hear your fixed mindset “voice.” As you approach a challenge, what does your inner voice say? As you hit a setback, what does your inner voice say? As you face criticism, what does your inner voice say? As you approach a challenge, that voice might say to you “Are you sure you can do it? Maybe you don’t have the talent.” “What if you fail—you’ll be a failure” “People will laugh at you for thinking you had talent.” “If you don’t try, you can protect yourself and keep your dignity.” As you hit a setback, the voice might say, “This would have been a snap if you really had talent.” “You see, I told you it was a risk. Now you’ve gone and shown the world how limited you are.” “ It’s not too late to back out, make excuses, and try to regain your dignity.” As you face criticism, you might hear yourself say, “It’s not my fault. It was something or someone else’s fault.” You might feel yourself getting angry at the person who is giving you feedback. “Who do they think they are? I’ll put them in their place.” The other person might be giving you specific, constructive feedback, but you might be hearing them say “I’m really disappointed in you. I thought you were capable but now I see you’re not.”

How To Change Your Mindset Con’t Step 2: Recognize that you have a choice How you interpret challenges, setbacks, and criticism is your choice You can interpret them in a fixed mindset or you can interpret them in a growth mindset… Fixed: “I am a failure” Growth: “I need to try a different approach” How you interpret challenges, setbacks, and criticism is your choice. -You can interpret them in a fixed mindset as signs that your fixed talents or abilities are lacking. -Or you can interpret them in a growth mindset as signs that you need to ramp up your strategies and effort, stretch yourself, and expand your abilities. It’s up to you. So as you face challenges, setbacks, and criticism, listen to the fixed mindset voice and...

How To Change Your Mindset Step 3: Talk to yourself with a growth mindset voice! As you approach a challenge: THE FIXED-MINDSET says “Are you sure you can do it? Maybe you don’t have the talent.” THE GROWTH-MINDSET answers, “I’m not sure I can do it now, but I think I can learn to with time and effort.” Step 4: Take action! Over time, the voice you listen to will determine your choices. Practice talking to yourself from the growth mindset - you can change your mind, but it will take time and practice!

How To Change Your Mindset Step 4: Take the growth mindset action Over time, the mindset voice you heed influences the choices you make, as well as your attitude. Practice hearing both voices, and practice acting on the growth mindset. See how you can make it work for you.

Let’s Practice! Draw yourself as a baby Draw yourself today Think of one way you’ve changed Think of one way you want to change Think of one thing you are good at that makes you proud Think of one area where you could change your mindset for a more positive outcome SHARE in your group – Do they agree?
