The Amazing World of Orcas

What does an orca look like? Orcas can be many different colors. They can be black, gray, white and even slightly yellow. A full grown male orca can be an average of 20 feet to 26 feet.

What does an orca look like continued… An adult female orca can be an average 16 feet to 23 feet. The largest orca ever recorded was 32 feet long.

How do orcas find food? Orcas hunt in groups called pods. At times, pod members will force a lot of fish into one spot and take turns eating. Sometimes they beach themselves to scare prey into the water where other orcas are waiting to feed.

How do orcas find food continued… If an orca beaches itself, that means it slides out of water onto the shore. When a orca pokes its head out of water to look for food, it is called spy hopping.

How does an orca act? Orcas can be very social. They are very curious animals. They like to jump out of water a lot.

How does an orca act continued… When an orca jumps out of water, that is called breaching. Orcas love to swim together. They are very playful.

What is a baby orca like? A baby orca is called a calf. A calf is usually 7 feet ( 2.2 meters ) at birth. Large sharks may attack it, but life in a pod offers the calf safety, and social activity.

What is a baby orca like continued… A pod is a group of 3 or more orcas living together. A baby orca is very protected in a pod.
