Importance of Learning to Read in the Primary Grades Reading is one of the main academic focus areas in the primary grades. Children must have a solid foundation in reading skills at an early age to read more complex books later and be proficient in their understanding of them. Reading is essential in any school subject, as textbooks and other written media are used to convey the majority of information being taught. "What many researchers have now shown is that for all children, learning to read and reading to learn should be happening simultaneously and continuously, from preschool through middle school — and perhaps beyond. And that's not all. Teaching comprehension has now emerged as a critical piece of learning to read, which the narrow emphasis on phonics and sight words in the early years of reading fails to address." Add reading across the content areas Learning to read and reading to learn Having students read by 3rd grade increases their college and career readiness levels http://teacher.scholastic.com/professional/readexpert/mythread.htm

Primary Grade Standards are Complex

Magnet Summary Role of Author/Illustrator (K) Who is telling the story and how it changes throughout (1st) RL 2.6 Point of View Differences in points of view of characters (2nd) Speak in different voices for each character (2nd)

Magnet Summary- Your Turn Use the following standards to create a Magnet Summary: RI 3.7 RF 3.3 RF 4.4 SL 2.6 (L 3.5) Assign groups, use chart paper – allow groups to share – Remind them to include all 3 grades

Introduce two-week cycle in 2nd grade and share the rationale and purpose behind the change.

Instructional Frameworks Guides teachers through the day-to-day use of Reading Wonders, McGraw-Hill in the 90-minute reading block. Aligned to the multiple standards addressed in each selection Word Work – Phonemic Awareness/Phonics/Fluency Oral Language – Listening/Speaking and Language Listening/Reading Comprehension –Literature/Informational Writing Use different color highlighters to note on frameworks the daily occurrences of each. Framework of Effective Instruction Show and go to next slide

Framework for Effective Instruction Use the standards, Instructional Frameworks, and planning cards to complete your section of the FEI Group 1 – Knowledge of Learners Group 4 - Engagement Group 2 – Learning Environment Group 5 – Instructional Delivery Group 3 – Instructional Planning Group 6 - Assessment Divide into groups allow to share out

First Grade Classroom In this first day of instruction, the teacher focuses his first graders on a complex text. The instruction centers on the vocabulary. https://youtu.be/WgQYvj2U4Kw Allow principals to make observation notes and have conversations about what they see in their schools vs. what is seen in the video. Where do we stop the video?

How do we create a culture of Readers and Writers? Set the example! Teaching grade-level standards in depth. Building a strong Phonics foundation that is always tied to text. Extend Reading to Writing during Whole Group and DI. Close Reading/Listening of each selection (including the Big Book in Kindergarten). Close reading can be done orally. Create a rich classroom library and allow students to read for pleasure and at their instructional level. Use the Media Center to foster the love of Reading. Allow for students to engage in collaborative conversations to strengthen their speaking and listening skills. Engage in school-wide Literacy Activities: Literacy nights, book swaps, buddy reading ,etc. Read and write across all content areas.
