Naming and Formula Writing

Covalent Compounds Naming Rules Subscripts tell how many atoms of each element there is Use prefixes in front of the name to denote the subscript: mono: 1 - hexa: 6 di: 2 - hepta: 7 tri: 3 - octa: 8 tetra: 4 - nano: 9 penta: 5 - deca: 10 The second name ends in -ide

Covalent Compounds Naming Examples Nitrogen dioxide NO2 – Mono is only used in the second part of the name. N2O3 – Nitrogen dioxide Dinitrogen trioxide

Covalent Compounds Formula Writing Write the symbols of the elements Write the subscripts for each element from the prefix

Covalent Compounds Formula Examples N2O5 SiBr4 Dinitrogen pentoxide – Silicon tetrabromide – N2O5 SiBr4

Ionic Compounds Naming Rules Cation is named first (metal) – keep original name E.g.: Mg+2 is Magnesium Anion is named second (non-metal)- ending of the name is replaced with –ide E.g.: Cl-1 is Chloride

Ionic Compounds Naming Examples Sodium sulfide Aluminum Chloride Na2S – AlCl3 – Sodium sulfide Aluminum Chloride

Ionic Compounds Formula Writing Rules Write the symbols of the elements in the compound starting with the metal. Determine the charge of each ion. Select the subscripts that will create a neutral compound. Put the metal with the non-metal together.

Ionic Compounds Formula Examples K3N Calcium Fluoride 1. Ca F Potassium Nitride – K3N

Transition Metals Naming Rules Cation is named first (metal) – keep original name E.g.: Fe+3 is Iron Determine the charge of the transition metal and the charge becomes a roman numeral after the name. looking at the subscript of the non-metal and make that the charge of the transition metal Anion is named second (non-metal)- ending of the name is replaced with –ide E.g.: Cl-1 is Chloride

Transition Metals Naming Examples Mangenese (II) flouride MnF2 – NiS – Mangenese (II) flouride Nickel (II) sulfide

Transition Metals Formula Rules Write the symbols of the elements in the compound starting with the metal. Determine the charge of each ion. The roman numeral in the parentheses is the charge for the transition metal. Select the subscripts that will create a neutral compound. Put the Metal with the non-metal together.

Transition Metals Formula Examples Cr2S3 Fe3N2 Chromium (III) Sulfide – Iron (II) nitride – Cr2S3 Fe3N2

Polyatomic Ions Naming Rules An ion that contains two or more non-metals bonding with a metal. Cation is named first (metal) – keep original name E.g.: Mg+2 is Magnesium Polyatomic ion is named second Refer to your chart for the name. E.g.: CO3-2 is carbonate

Polyatomic Ions Naming Examples Potassium phosphate Sodium Hydroxide K3PO4 – NaOH – Potassium phosphate Sodium Hydroxide

Polyatomic Ions Formula Rules Write the symbols of the elements in the compound starting with the metal Determine the charge of each ion, use the chart for the polyatomic ion Select the subscripts that will create a neutral compound. Use parentheses around the polyatomic ion if more than one polyatomic is required.

Polyatomic Ions Formula Examples (NH4)2SO4 LiNO3 Ammonium Sulfate – Lithium Nitrate – (NH4)2SO4 LiNO3
