King Arthur Legendary British leader, who led the defence against the Saxons. Arthur’s historical existance is debated by modern historians.

Geoffrey of Monmouth Historia Regulum Britanniae (History of the Kings of Britain) Many elements and incidents that are now a part of Arthurian story appear there.

Chrétien de Troyes Began the genre of Arthurian romance in 12th century. Added Lancelot and the Holy Grail. Focus shifts from Arthur to other characters.
