FUSIBILITY STUDY OF GAMBELLA IRRIGATION PROJECTS NOVEMBER 2017

Gambella Irrigation Projects

Bassel Irrigation Project Water Source  It has m 3 water for livestock and domestic use  The actual demand of livestock and domestic use is  There is also enough water for irrigation  The total demand for one season is 5480 m 3

Bassel Irrigation Project

Command area  Their is enough command area  for command area there are three options 1. Just at the edge of the pond water  It doesn't request us road crossing structure  It is inundated by summer flood  it has no any farming experience

Bassel irrigation project 2. At the left side of the road just in front of the pond water  At this site there is existing farming experience  it is not affected bay flood  It need site clearing

Bassel irrigation project 3. It is found on the left side of the main road  Just some 150 t0 200 m above the water source  It may cost us some additional installation and operation cost  There is existing farming experience

Bassel irrigation project Proposed Ideas  Taking topographic survey  Design and construct main and secondary canals  Use small diesel or electrical pumps  ha capacity  Depending on the interest and experience of the society it may expand for the future

Wanke Irrigation project Water Source  The water source for the proposed irrigation project is Pill river  The river is seasonal river  It dried for two months  it also serve for livestock and domestic use  Its bank is not stable  When it flood over top and inundate the command area

Wanke Irrigation project Unstable river bank

Wanke Irrigation project  It is not suitable to construct a wire  or we have to change the site Command Area  It has enough command area  However it is inundated by flowed up to the mid of November  It is suitable for crop production only for three month  For some time it has enough moisture

Wanke Irrigation project

 There is existing farming experience in the area  Mainly maze and Sorghum and some times tomato Infrastructure  The infrastructure needs careful attention  Especially for construction  It requires Construction material

Wanke Irrigation project  Proposed Idea's  The water potential should be measured at the dray period  searching appropriate site for wire  on another kebele  Design Pump Irrigation  Detail study and design  Taking topographic survey  Socio economic study (care should be taken for the society experience and interest)  Environmental study

Bonga Irrigation scheme Water Source  The water source is bonga river  It is gaged river  it is possible to know the exact capacity  It has well constructed weir  Some parts of the head work is needs repair and maintenance  the intake gate  The sluice gate

Bonga Irrigation scheme

 The farm infrastructure  main canal  Its some part field by silt  Some of the cross drainage structures are damaged  Some of the crossing structures need repair and maintenance

Bonga Main canal siltation MC siltation

Bonga Irrigation scheme  Command area  there is existing command area  The farmers have good experience and interest for irrigation

Bonga Irrigation scheme Irrigation practice

Bonga Irrigation scheme  Proposed Actions  repaired and maintain head work structures  Taking topographic survey  for the main canal  Redesign it by making masonry lined canal  Redesign also farm structures  This well be decided after looking of the command area

Gillo Puchalla Irrigation Project Main problems  siltation  Canal and crossing strictures damage  Operation cost  Experience of farmers

Gillo Puchalla Irrigation Project Siltation

Gillo Puchalla Irrigation Project SeepageCanal damages

Gillo Puchalla Irrigation Project Proposed solutions  constructing protection wall and gate  We can provide the design

Gillo Puchalla Irrigation Project

 Plastering the main canal and maintaining secondary canal and crossing structures  Reconstructing main canal may be to costly  covering operation cost for some season

Baro pinko  It the same to Gillo pichalla

  Thank you 
