Public and Private Area Landscaping By: Mr. Brock

Public Area Good design can greatly enhance property value Area from the front of the house to the road Usually not used for family living

Public Area considerations House is the most important element Landscape is viewed against the house when viewed from street or sidewalk Design may be dictated by style of home Hardscapes (walks, drives, fences) should compliment not compete Plants should compliment house and provide a proper setting

Public Area Main purpose is to blend the structures of the house with the general surroundings so it looks natural with site Soften and blend vertical lines with strong horizontal ground lines Soften architectural lines of building Frame the building Maintain open lawn areas

Public Area

Public Area Center of interest and focal point of plantings is the doorway Landscape should be interesting but not compete with the doorway Plantings by the house- foundation plantings Plantings in the foreground away from house

Foundation and Foreground

Focal Planting areas Corners- strong vertical lines Each side of the doorway

Door and Corner plantings

Driveways 1 car= 12-13’ 2 car= 21-23’ Many materials to chose from depending on budget Cobblestone, concrete, asphalt etc.

Driveway Materials

Sidewalks and Secondary walks Primary sidewalk= 4’ Solid secure surface Secondary walk= 2 ½ -3’ Hard surface Stepping stones 24” on center

Sidewalks and secondary paths

Stepping stones

Private Area Private area of the landscape should be designed around the families interest Should emphasize outdoor recreation, cooking, eating, and entertainment Designed for utility and beauty

Private Area Usually includes the service area Service area includes everything pertaining to work Tools, equipment, trash, garden etc.

Private Areas Private Area extends the indoors-outdoors There should be an easily accessed area close to the kitchen for outdoor cookouts and eating

Outdoor Rooms Private area is used to create outdoor rooms These outdoor rooms have all the elements of indoor rooms including ceiling, walls, and a floor The ceiling could be the sky, canopy, or a structure The walls could be structural or planted The floor can be solid (wood/concrete), or gravel, or grass

Structural Outdoor Room

Plant Oriented Outdoor Room

Walls and Fencing Walls and Fences are used to ensure privacy of the private area Uses Gives privacy Screens service area Protection Background for flowers and shrubs Wind shelter Barrier for children and pets Ornamental Feature

Walls and Fences There are a variety of materials available to build walls and fences Wood, stone, brick, and plant materials Combining plant materials with building materials is best

Hedges Hedges can be used in place of fences They can be tall or short They enclose space and block wind as good as wood or masonry However, they take time to mature And they require more space 6’ fence=10” ground space 6’ hedge=6’-8’ ground space

Hedges

Lawn Grass lawns in the private area are very relaxing and have a cooling effect However, lawns require a lot of maintenance Groundcovers require less maintenance and may be used as a substitute to grass in low traffic areas

Groundcover
