Chapter 4 Application Software: Programs that let you work and play My name is Emme Engelhorn and I will be presenting on Chapter 4 which is about Application Software with an emphasis on programs that let you work and play. By: Emme Engelhorn

The Nuts and Bolts of Software Software: a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do Two main types of software: Application Software Productivity Software Business Software Media and Entertainment Software System Software The term software refers to a set of instructions that tells the computer what to do. Also an instruction set called a program allows us to interact with computers. All computers have two types of software: Application software and system software. Application Software is the software you use to do tasks at home, school, and work. Examples of this include productivity software, business software, and media and entertainment software. System software is software that helps run the computer and coordinate instructions between application software and the computer's hardware devices. Emme Engelhorn

What software do I need to install on my computer? Two types of software you can install on your computer: Proprietary (Or Commercial) Software Open Source Software Almost every new computer comes with preinstalled software so there are only two types of software that a person would need to install onto their computers and these include proprietary (or commercial) software and open source software. Propriety software is software you buy such as Microsoft Office Applications. Open source software is free software that is available with few licensing and copyright restrictions. Emme Engelhorn

Productivity and Business Software Word Processing Software Spreadsheet Software Presentation Software Database Software Personal Finance Software Small Business Software Productivity and business software are very important sources and help make using computers easier. Productivity software includes programs that let you perform various tasks required at home, school, and business. Examples of these programs include word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, personal finance, and small business software. Word processing software is used to create and edit documents. Spreadsheet software lets you make calculations and perform numerical analyses. On the other hand, presentation software such as PowerPoint is used to create a slide show. Applications such as Oracle and Microsoft Access are examples of Database software which allows you store and organize data. Personal Finance software helps you manage your daily finances. Lastly, there is small business software which allows you to keep good records and track your expenses and income. Emme Engelhorn

Mobile Commerce Two main uses of Mobile Commerce Mobile Payments Mobile Coupons and Barcodes Mobile commerce also known as m-commerce uses applications on smartphones and tablets to buy and sell products. There are two main examples of mobile commerce. The first is mobile payments which allows you to pay for products by using your phone instead of using a debit card. Another example is mobile coupons and barcodes. This lets mobile device apps look up information about a product. Also, many stores have virtual loyalty cards on mobile apps that allow you to receive discounts or coupons. Emme Engelhorn

Common Types of Large Business-Related Software Project Management Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) E-commerce Computer-aided Design (CAD) Vertical Market When it comes to large business, there are 6 main software applicaions that is used. The first is project management which create scheduling charts to plan and track specific tasks and coordinate resources. The next is customer relationship management. CRM stores sales and client contact information in one central database. There is also Enterprising Resource Planning which controls many “back office” operations and processing functions such as billing, production, inventory management, and human resources management. Large companies also use E-commerce which facilities website creation and hosting services, shopping cart setup, and credit card processing services. Another type of software that is used is computer-aided design. CAD creates automated designs, technical drawings, and 3D model visualizations for architecture, automotive, aerospace, and mechanical engineering industries. Lastly there is the vertical market which addresses the needs of business in a specific industry such as real estate, banking and automotive industries. Vertical industry focus on a specific industry instead of giving a broad view of multiple industries. Emme Engelhorn

Can I Borrow Software That I Don’t Own? Software Piracy: when a person makes more copies of the software than the license permits Fined heavily for doing this When you purchase software, there is a license that tells you how many times you can install the software. If you make more copies than the license permits you are participating in software piracy. Through this, the financial loss to the software industry is estimated to be over $50 billion which takes money away from further software research and development. You can also be fined for doing this. A company or individual can pay up to $150,000 for each software title copied. Emme Engelhorn

Multimedia and Entertainment Software Digital Image and Video Editing Software Digital Audio Software Gaming Software Educational and Reference Software Drawing Software Multimedia software includes digital image and video editing software, digital audio software, gaming software, educational and reference software, and drawing software. Image editing software is geared to the casual photographer while digital video editing software is used to help refine videos. Digital Audio software includes downloaded music, audiobooks, or podcasts. Gaming software allows you to create video games. Drawing software lets you create or edit 2D line based drawings. Emme Engelhorn

How Cloud Computing Works Two sides to cloud computing: Front Back What you need to be aware of when it comes to the cloud: Security and Privacy Backup Access Issues Cloud computing refers to storing data, files, and applications on the web and being able to access and manipulate these files and applications from any Internet-connected device. There are two main sides to cloud computing. The front end is the side we see as users such as Google Chrome. The back end consists of various data centers and server farmers that house the files and program you access through the cloud. There are some considerations with cloud computing that a person needs to be careful of. All of this information is protected through passwords that user sets up. Also there are instances when the cloud has shut down and lost information so it is smart to put very important data in a backup system. You should also store your most critical files and programs offline. Emme Engelhorn

Educational and Reference Software Test Preparation Simulation Instructional Trip Planning Home Design/Improvement Course Management Brain Training Genealogy A few examples of educational reference software are test preparation, simulation, instructional, trip planning, home design/improvement, course management, brain training, genealogy. Test preparation is designed to improve your performance on standardized tests. Simulation allows you to experience a real situation through a virtual environment. Next is instructional which is designed to teach you almost anything for playing a musical instrument to learning a language or cooking. Trip planning generates maps and provides driving instructions; some incorporate hotel, restaurants, and other trip information. There is also home design/improvement which provides 2d or 3d templates and images to let you better visualize indoor and outdoor remodeling projects and landscaping ideas. Course management is web based software that creates a virtual learning experience, including course materials, tests, and discussion boards. Brain training features games and activities to exercise your brain to improve your memory, processing speed, attention, and multitasking capabilities. Last there is genealogy. This helps chart the relationships between family members through multiple generations. Emme Engelhorn
