Cave Art Why do people create art? What are some different ways to create art? What do people use to create art?

Cave Art 30,000 to 11,000 years old Found in Europe- mostly France and Spain Over 300 caves

Cave Art Who created cave art? Neanderthals Cro-Magnon

Creating Cave Art Engraving- carved into cave walls Sculpture/Reliefs- built out of clay Paintings and Drawings Paint made from charcoal, clay and minerals Red, yellow, and black colors

Paintings and Drawings Drawing- used chunks of minerals against cave walls Painting- ground charcoal, clay, and minerals into a powder and added water Paintbrushes made out of reeds and sticks Blew paint through a straw Drawn on bumps (protrusions) on walls to make images look 3D

What did they draw? Animals Bison, mammoths, horses, bears Side Profiles- side of head, body, tail, ALL 4 legs Animals drawn in groups No settings No surrounding features such as the ground, horizon or landscape

Humans Not as common as animal drawings NO human interaction (ex. Fighting)
