Tuesday, January 9, 2018 Bellwork: Take out a sheet of paper. Put your name and class period on it. Write an adventure story. Include at least one main character that goes on an adventure. This will be turned in at the end of class on the same paper as the Quiz Questions for the Exit Ticket.

Tuesday, January 9, 2018 Objective: I can take notes about Greek Gods and The Odyssey. I will discuss Greek life and the characters in The Odyssey. RL 5: I can analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work of literature from outside the United States. Agenda: Bellwork Objective Notes Activity/Assessment

How To Note Write down notes in your own words Write down the important information Info in different colors Info that is talked about Make sure you can read your notes, handwriting, abbreviations

Key Words Mythology- From the Greek word Mythos. Beliefs that revolve around supernatural forces. Mythology beliefs were initially passed down verbally, eventually written down by later generations. Purpose was to explain the universe and all that is in it. Epic- Long narrative poems about heroes’ adventures. A quest or journey undertaken in search of something of value. Searches the unknown world. Involve the supernatural forces.. Hero is glorified at the end. Told from memory. Sometimes accompanied with music. Modern Epics include The Matrix, Star Wars, The Hobbit. Allusion- Reference to a famous person, place, or event

Key Words Hubris- Excessive self pride or self-confidence. In all of Greek literature, especially in The Odyssey. Prideful to a fault. Insulting to others. Causes problems.

Characters Menelaus - King of Sparta, brother of Agamemnon, and husband of Helen. Helen - Wife of Menelaus and queen of Sparta.

Characters Penelope- Wife of Odysseus

Characters Telemachus – Son of Odysseus. An infant when his father left for Troy. He is wholly devoted to his mother and to maintaining his father’s estate.

Characters Athena -As goddess of wisdom and battle, Athena has a soft spot for Odysseus.

Characters Polyphemus - One of the Cyclopes (uncivilized one-eyed giants) whose island Odysseus comes to soon after leaving Troy.

Characters Circe - The beautiful witch-goddess who transforms Odysseus’s crew into swine

Characters Zeus - King of gods and men, who mediates the disputes of the gods on Mount Olympus.

Characters Calypso - The beautiful nymph who falls in love with Odysseus when he lands on her island-home

Characters Antinous - The most arrogant of Penelope’s suitors.
