Italijoje švietimas privalomas nuo 6 iki 16 metų amžiaus Švietimas suskirstytas į penkias dalis: 1. Vaikų darželis 2. Pradinė mokykla 3. Žemesnioji vidurinė mokykla 4. Aukštesnioji vidurinė mokykla 5. Universitetas Italija turi ir viešąją, ir privačiąją švietimo sistemą. Vidurinis išsilavinimas trunka 8 metus ir susideda iš dviejų dalių: 1. Vidurinė žemesnioji mokykla (scuola media) trunka 3 metus. 2. Vidurinė aukštesnioji mokykla (scuola superiore) trunka 5 metus. Po kiekvieno etapo privaloma laikyti egzaminą.

Yra trys pagrindiniai vidurinių mokyklų tipai, kurie suskirstyti į dar smulkesnes dalis. a) Liceo (Licėjus) b) Instituto tecniko (techninis institutas) c) Instituto professionale (profesinis institutas) Vidurinis išsilavinimas 2013 m. Italijos vidurinio švietimo sistema užėmė 21 vietą pasaulyje (vidutinė). Pasirodė didelis skirtumas tarp Šiaurės Italijoje ir Pietų Italijoje esančių mokyklų (Š. Italijoje mokyklos pasirodė žymiai geriau, negu P. Italijoje. Jų rezultatai pralenkia Italijos vidurkį) Italijoje mokiniai baigia mokyklą 19 metų. Pradinis išsilavinimas (scuola elementare) Prieš pradedant mokytis pradinėje mokykloje galima trejus metus lankyti darželį (neprivaloma). Trunka 5 metus.
