AN EXAMPLE OF SUBTRACTION WITH LIKE DENOMINATORS You sell candy ….

Each container has 8 bins When describing how many containers you have to sell, your DENOMINATOR is 8. This is the number of pieces your whole is divided into. 8 bins

If you didn’t know, now you know A bin is a box or enclosed space for storing things. A container is an object like a box, a crate or a can that can hold something. You can have containers inside of containers, like boxes inside of boxes

Okay, now back to the problem

That can also be written as Here are 28/8 containers. That can also be written as 28 8 Or as 3 4 8 Or as 3 ½

Again, here are 28/8 containers. If you take away 4/8

You have 24/8 – 4/8 If you’re still not sure of the answer, count the number of bins
