The Nature of Probability and Statistics CHAPTER 1 The Nature of Probability and Statistics Note: This PowerPoint is only a summary and your main source should be the book.

Introduction Statistics: is the science of conducting studies to collect ,organize, summarize, analyze and drawing conclusions from data. A Variable: is characteristic or attribute that can assume different values. Data: are the values that the variables can assume. Random Variable: variables whose determined by chance. . data set : Collection of data values . Note: This PowerPoint is only a summary and your main source should be the book.

1-1:Descriptive and Inferential Statistics Note: This PowerPoint is only a summary and your main source should be the book.

Descriptive Statistic Inferential statistics Data can be used in different ways and the two main areas are Descriptive Statistic consists of the collection , organization , summarization and presentation of data. EX:”the average age of the student is 14 years” Inferential statistics consists of generalizing from samples to populations, performing estimations and hypothesis testing, determining relationships among variables, and making predictions. EX: the relationship between smoking and lung cancer” Inferential statistic use Probability i.e the chance of an event occurring . Note: This PowerPoint is only a summary and your main source should be the book.

1-1:Descriptive and Inferential Statistics It is important to distinguish between A population:consists of all subjects (human or otherwise) that are being studied. A sample :is a group of subjects selected from a population Note: This PowerPoint is only a summary and your main source should be the book.

1-2:Variables and Types of Data Qualitative Quantitative Discrete Continuous Note: This PowerPoint is only a summary and your main source should be the book.

1-2:Variables and Types of Data Qualitative Variables: are variables that can be placed into distinct categories ,according to some characteristic or attribute. For example: Gender ,Major ,Color……etc Quantitative variables : are numerical and can be ordered or ranked. For example: Age ,Height , Weight ,temperature …..etc Note: This PowerPoint is only a summary and your main source should be the book.

1-2:Variables and Types of Data Discrete Variables: assume values that can be counted For example: number of children in a family , number of student in classroom……etc Continuous Variables: assume an infinite number of values between any two specific values. For example: Temperature , Time …..etc Note: This PowerPoint is only a summary and your main source should be the book.

1-2:Variables and Types of Data Measurement Scales Qualitative Nominal Ordinal Quantitative Interval Ratio Note: This PowerPoint is only a summary and your main source should be the book.

1-2:Variables and Types of Data Measurement Scales of Qualitative Nominal classifies data into mutually exclusive , exhausting categories in which no order or ranking can be imposed on the data Ordinal classifies data into categories can be ranked For example: Grade(A,B,C) , Size( S,M,L) For example: Eye color , Major ,Gender Note: This PowerPoint is only a summary and your main source should be the book.

1-2:Variables and Types of Data Measurement Scale of Quantitative Interval level ranks data and precise differences between units of measure do exist ,however there is no meaningful zero Ratio level possesses all the characteristics of interval, and there exist a true zero. For example: Height , Weight, Time For example: Temperature , IQ test Note: This PowerPoint is only a summary and your main source should be the book.
