STRENGTH OF ACIDS & BASES ACIDS BASE & THEIR REACTIVITY ACID & BASE SUB UNITS ACIDS & BASES INDICATORS STRENGTH OF ACIDS & BASES ACIDS BASE & THEIR REACTIVITY IONIZATION OF ACIDS & BASES

PRIVIOUS KNOWLEDGE Basic property of acids Basic property of bases Some acids that are useful in our daily life Some bases in everyday life Indicators. Eg-litmus paper, phenolphthalein, methyl orange etc. Reaction of acid & base with metal nonmetal carbonates & bicarbonates

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE NEW APPORACH Sugarcane-sweet Tamarind-sour Alum-sour Amla- sour Gherkin(tondli)-bitter ACID means SOUR taste BASE means BITTER taste

NEW ADDITION NAME OF ACID CHEMICAL FORMULA Acetic Acid CH3COOH Formic acid HCOOH Carbonic acid H2CO3 Phosphoric acid H3PO4

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE Traffic signal Speed braker Road signs School bell Alarm, fire alarm ,ambulance alarm All these are indicator In chemistry ACIDIC AND BASIC Nature of compounds indicated by some natural and chemical substances are called INDICATORS

NEW INDICATORS Universal indicators -Mixture of several indicators Olfactory indicator – Eg.- Nilgiri oil ,Cologne water Old indicators-Litmus , Turmeric, Phenolphthalein , Methyl orange , Eosin

GROUP ACTIVITY pH means potenz means concentration. SAMPLE ORIGINAL COLOUR pH NATURE KOKAM JUICE RED 4 ACIDIC PALAK JUICE GREEN 8 BASIC TOMATO 5 DIL.KOH COLOURLESS 13 PREPARED TEA BROWN PUMPKIN MUDDY CUCUMBER FAINT GREEN pH means potenz means concentration.

Activity-1 pH RANGE NATURE 0-3 7-9 3-5 9-12 5-7 12-14 7

THINK IT OVER In your family some person suffer from acidity What are the symptoms? Why it happens? What house hold remedies you use? What is the traditional treatment for honey bee sting ? What is the reason behind it?

IMPORTANCE OF pH IN & AROUND US ACTIVITY- Collect sample of rainwater, find out colour change of pH Paper and pH Of rainwater. What is the nature of rainwater? THINK IT OVER 1. Finding pH of water why we use rain water? 2. If pH of rain water is less than 7, what is the nature of rain water? 3. If such water flows in river how it affects living things?Explain.

IMPORTANCE OF pH IN EVERYDAY LIFE -IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEM (PLANTS & ANIMAL) IN HUMAN AND ANIMAL- 1. Human blood, tears and saliva have pH of nearly 7.4 2. If pH falls below 7 or rise more than 7.8 it becomes difficult for survival of living things IN PLANTS – 1.They have healthy growth only if soil has specific pH which should be nither alkaline nor highly acidic

ACTIVITY 1. Agri .Soil = (2g) +5ml of water -> Filter it. In the Filtrate dip universal indicator paper. Ph of soil= 2. Tooth Decay= Tooth decay is cause by acid. Our tooth enamal is made of calcium phosphate. It is insoluble in water But if pH of our body falls below 5.5 our mouth is moderately acidic and tooth decay begins So how we can we stop tooth decaying? By using tooth paste and good quality tooth brush

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 1. Self defence of animal by chemical warfare Stung by a honey bee and yellow ant we feel pain and irritation because of formic acid (methanoic acid) Plants like nettle have leaves with stingy hair 2.Regaining shine of a tarnished copper vessel by use of acid Ans.- Copper oxide is basic in nature Tamarind is acidic in nature Layer of copper oxide is removed by citric acid

ACTIVITY Test the pH values of following solutions – 1. Saliva(before meal) 2. Saliva (after meal) 3. Lemon juice 4. Carrot juice 5. Coffee 6. Tap water

HOTS QUESTION Aqueous HCl shows change of litmus paper but dry HCl does not . Why? Tooth enamal is hardest substance in our body. How does it undergo damage by eating sweets ? What should we do to prevent it? After vigorous exercise we go through cramps &pain in muscles ? Name the scientist who has given pH scales? Ethyl alcohol contains H as well as OH, then why it is not acidic or basic? Why are people suffering from stomach pain due to acidity, advised to drink cold milk?
