Lesson 3.7 Estimate and Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Wednesday, Aug 31 Lesson 3.7 Estimate and Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Objective: To understand how to estimate and divide decimals by whole numbers.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Lesson 3.6 is estimation and will be incorporated into lessons 3.7 and 3.8 Why is it helpful to estimate quotients?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers When estimating quotients with decimals, use comparable numbers that are easy to divide mentally. Convert the decimal to a whole number that is easily divisible by the other whole number.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Example 8.6 ÷ 2 ≈ What number is close to 8.6 and divisible by 2?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Example 8.6 ÷ 2 ≈ 8 ÷ 2 8 is a comparable number to 8.6 and is easily divisible by 2.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Example 8.6 ÷ 2 ≈ 8 ÷ 2 = 4

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Estimate 11.25÷ 3. What number is close to 11.25 and divisible by 3?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Estimate 11.25÷ 3. 12 ÷ 3 = 4 3, 6, 9, 12, 15

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Estimate 49.8 ÷ 7 (Do this on your own)

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Estimate 49.8 ÷ 7 49 ÷ 7 = 7 7: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49….

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Estimate 98.1÷ 25 (Do this on your own)

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Estimate 98.1÷ 25 4 25)100 25: 25, 50, 75, 100…..

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Estimate 32 ÷ 3.9 (Do this on your own)

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Estimate 32 ÷ 3.9 32 ÷ 4 = 8 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32….

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers When dividing a decimal by a whole number, divide as with whole numbers. Then place the decimal point in the quotient directly above it’s place in the dividend.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2 ≈ Estimate. What is a comparable number for 6.8 that is divisible by 2 (in the multiples list of 2) ?

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2 ≈ 3 Estimate. What is a comparable number for 6.8 that is divisible by 2 (in the multiples list of 2) ? 6 ÷ 2 = 3

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2 ≈ 3 Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number. Step 1 – Place the numbers in the dividing bracket.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2 ≈ 3 2)6.8 Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number. Step 1 – Place the numbers in the dividing bracket.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2 ≈ 3 2)6.8 Note – the first number in the expression ALWAYS goes inside the bracket.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2 ≈ 3 2)6.8 Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number. Step 2 – Divide and ignore the decimal point.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2 ≈ 3 3 4 2)6.8 -6 08 -8 0 Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number. Step 2 – Divide and ignore the decimal point.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2 ≈ 3 3 4 2)6.8 -6 08 -8 0 Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number. Step 3 – Bring the decimal point to the quotient, directly above the dividend.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2 ≈ 3 3.4 2)6.8 -6 08 -8 0 Dividing a Decimal by a Whole Number. Step 3 – Bring the decimal point to the quotient, directly above the dividend.

Divide Decimals by Whole Numbers Find 6.8÷ 2 ≈ 3 3.4 2)6.8 -6 08 -8 0 It is very important the digits are lined up in the bracket!
