The Epistle to the Hebrews Lesson 22 The Forever Fellowship Hebrews 13:1-25

The Forever Fellowship Hebrews 13 The Hebrew Christians needed to see their relationship with Christ and one another as abiding forever. Continue in love (13:1) The Lord will never leave nor forsake you (13:5) Jesus is the same forever (13:8) Willingly suffer reproach outside the city gate while seeking the continuing city to come (13:13-14) Continually offer the sacrifice of praise (13:15) Obey rulers who watch out for your souls (13:17) The covenant is everlasting (13:20) Christ’s glory is forever and ever (13:21) Bear with the word of exhortation (13:22)

Exhortations to Remember Hebrews 13:1-7 Remember to show love (13:1-3) To brethren (1 Peter 4:9) To strangers (Genesis 18 & 19) To prisoners (Matthew 25:34-40) Honor marriage (13:4) Don’t be covetous; be content (13:5-6) The Lord has promised that He will never ever leave or forsake us Literally translated: “No, I will not leave thee; no, neither will I not utterly forsake thee.” (Adam Clark) Remember and follow those who rule over you and have spoken God’s word (13:7) “Considering the outcome of their conduct!”

An Eternal Relationship with Christ “Outside The Camp” -- Hebrews 13:8-14 Jesus is unchanging (13:8) Do not be moved by changing doctrines (13:9) The heart should be established by grace, not foods. “Especially (ceremonial) articles allowed or forbidden by the Jewish law” (Strong’s Dictionary). They did not profit those who partook. Our altar is superior and exclusive (13:10) We must go outside the camp (13:11-14) The bodies of sacrificed animals were burned outside the camp (13:11; Leviticus 4:12, 21; 16:27) Jesus suffered outside the gate (13:12) Let us go to Him outside the camp, bearing reproach and seeking an eternal city (13:13-14)

Continue to Sacrifice, Obey & Pray Hebrews 13:15-21 Let us continually offer sacrifice (13:15-16) As a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:5) With praise & thanksgiving, doing good & sharing. Obey those who rule over us (13:17; 1 Timothy 5:17) They watch out for our souls (13:24; Acts 20:31) Pray for one who desires to live honorably (13:18-19) Rely on God’s grace and power as we work to please Him (13:20-21; Philippians 2:13)

Conclusion of Hebrews Hebrews 13:22-25 Bear with the word of exhortation (13:22) The word translated “bear with” or “suffer” (ἀνέχομαι) is defined by Thayer as “to hold oneself up against, that is, (figuratively) put up with: - bear with endure, forbear, suffer.” The recipients of this epistle should bear with it because of its brevity! It was written in “few words.” Grace and greetings (13:23-25)
