Metric Measurements

It is important that measurements be accurate & easily communicated to other people

The scientific system of measurement is called the metric system

Scientists Use metric Units to measure length, volume, mass, weight, density, & temperature.

Length: the basic unit of length in the metric system is the meter.

To measure the length of an object smaller than a meter, use the metric unit called a centimeter.

There are 100 centimeters in a meter.

To measure objects smaller than a centimeter, the millimeter is used.

There are 1000 millimeters in a meter.

1 centimeter = 10 millimeters Measuring Length 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? For larger measurements, of distance, scientists use the kilometer.

There are 1000 meters in a kilometer

To measure distances in space, astronomer use a unit of distance called the light year.

A light year is the distance light travels in a year.

A light year Is about 9.5 trillion (9,500,000,000,000,000) Kilometers.

Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. So remember, in science, volume is how much space something takes up, NOT how loud your music is Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.

In the metric system, the basic unit of volume is the liter.

To measure volumes smaller than a liter, scientists use the milliliter.

Liters and milliliters are used to measure the volume of liquids.

English vs. Metric Units Which is larger? A. 1 liter or 1 gallon B. 1 liter or 1 quart C. 1 milliliter or 1 fluid ounce 1 fl oz = 29.573 ml 1 12-oz can of soda would equal approximately 355 ml. 1 gallon = 3.79 liters It would take approximately 3 ¾ 1-liter bottles to equal a gallon. 1 quart = 0.946 liters

Measuring Volume of liquids & Irregular Objects We use graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other objects.

What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL

What causes the meniscus? A meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides.

The metric unit used to measure the volume of solids is called the cubic centimeter.

Measuring Solid Volume We can measure the volume of regular object using the formula length x width x height. 10 cm 9 cm 8 cm _____ X _____ X _____ = _____

Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object.

The basic unit of mass in the metric system is the gram.

To measure the mass of large objects, the kilogram is used.

A kilogram is 1000 grams.

Measuring Mass We will be using triple-beam balances to find the mass of various objects. The objects are placed on the scale and then you move the weights on the beams until you get the lines on the right-side of the scale to match up.
