Kake Cannery My name comes from the Tlingit language, meaning “mouth of dawn” or “opening of daylight”. I am located on an island which is part of an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. I was important in the early 1900’s as I helped establish the salmon industry in southeastern Alaska. I am no longer a functioning cannery. I am located in a town that now has about 700 people. Lighthouse on Block Island I was constructed between the years of 1874 and 1875 to help light the way for boats coming into harbor from the Atlantic Ocean. Although I was originally built 300 feet from the Mohegan Bluffs, I was moved away 250 feet more because the Atlantic waves crashing into the bluffs were quickly eroding the land away.
