McKinley’s Presidency Republican from Ohio Elected in 1896; again in 1900 defeating William J. Bryan both times Led U.S. during the Spanish-American War Agreed to buy Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines; later annexed the Philippines which led to a war there Set up a protectorate over Cuba

McKinley Dies… Oh noooo! Shot by Leon Czolgosz (an anarchist) in September 1901 McKinley is replaced by his Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt (youngest person to serve as President) From New York; was a complete renaissance man

Taft’s Presidency Brought twice as many anti-trust lawsuits as Roosevelt 1911 – Suit against US Steel over purchase of Tennessee Coal and Iron Company in 1907 T.R. approved this purchase T.R. believed the best way to deal with trusts was to let them exist but to regulate them Taft was destroying this balance
