PRELUDE Praise His Greatness arr. Mark Hayes

It’s a good thing to have all the props pulled out from under us occasionally. It gives us some sense of what is rock under our feet, and what is sand. Madeleine L’Engle, Writer

He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose. Jim Elliot, Missionary killed by the Auca Indians

First Lady and humanitarian The most important thing in any relationship is not what you get but what you give. Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady and humanitarian

Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take nothing that you have received….but only what you have given. Francis of Assisi

Give a person everything he or she wants, and at that moment, everything will not be everything. Immanuel Kant

Former Chaplain of the Senate Your priorities in life aren’t just marginal options. They are life-determining. Your personality is molded inescapably into the image of what you give priority… We become like the god we worship. Richard Halverson, Former Chaplain of the Senate

If we look to created things to give us the meaning, hope and happiness that only God himself can give, it will eventually break our hearts. Tim Keller

In fact, we are most like God when we are giving. We are at our best when we are giving. In fact, we are most like God when we are giving. Max Lucado

Love has no awareness of merit or demerit; it has no scale by which its portion may be weighed or measured. It does not seek to balance giving and receiving. Love loves: this is its nature. Howard Thurman

PRAYER OF TRANSFORMATION

We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing; He chastens and hastens His will to make known; The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing, Sing praises to His name; He forgets not His own.

our God with us joining, Ordaining, maintaining Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining, Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine; So from the beginning the fight we were winning; Thou, Lord, wast at our side; all glory be Thine!

Thou leader triumphant, And pray that Thou still We all do extol Thee, Thou leader triumphant, And pray that Thou still our defender will be. Let Thy congregation escape tribulation; Thy name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!

PRAYER FOR FORGIVENESS (in unison) Adapted from Angela Ashwin

Our Father, you have carried us through all our wanderings, and loved us through all our rebelliousness. We praise you. You have given us untold riches; friends to love, beauty to enjoy, quiet spaces.

We praise you for life on this planet, for trust and love with others, and for the unimaginable gift of the Gospel. Keep us thankful all our days,

that no matter the circumstances, we may never lose sight of hope and delight, trusting in your faithful provision for us. In the name of Jesus, your greatest gift, we pray. Amen.

A Time for Silence You may use this time for silent prayer, meditation, or simply to rest in the presence of God.

Assurance of Forgiveness

* Glory be to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

Thanksgiving for the Word

O Truth unchanged, unchanging, O Light of our dark sky: O Word of God incarnate, O Wisdom from on high, O Truth unchanged, unchanging, O Light of our dark sky: We praise You for the radiance That from the hallowed page, A lantern to our footsteps, Shines on from age to age.

Scripture Readings — Luke 6: 24-26, 30-36 (New Testament, pg 64 in pew Bible)

“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation “But woe to you who are rich,     for you have received your consolation. “Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. “Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep.

“Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again.

Do to others as you would have them do to you Do to others as you would have them do to you. “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.

If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you?

Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return.

Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

God of Grace and God of Glory HYMN God of Grace and God of Glory # 420 in the Blue Hymnals

God of grace and God of glory, on your people pour your power; crown your ancient church's story, bring its bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour.

Lo. the hosts of evil round us scorn the Christ, assail his ways Lo! the hosts of evil round us scorn the Christ, assail his ways! From the fears that long have bound us free our hearts to faith and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days, for the living of these days.

Cure your children's warring madness; bend our pride to your control; shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, lest we miss thy kingdom's goal, lest we miss thy kingdom's goal.

Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore; let the gift of your salvation be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, serving you whom we adore, serving you whom we adore.

The Prayers of the People

Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in his wonderful face And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of his glory and grace.

The Lord’s Prayer (Debtors version)

Our Father, who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory. Amen.

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me; Melt me, Response Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me; Fall afresh on me; Melt me, mold me, Fill me, use me. Fall afresh on me.

Anglican Priest and Writer, Offering of Prayer (in unison) Adapted from Jim Cotter Anglican Priest and Writer, 1942-2014

where madness ruled the world and evil sought to overwhelm good. We Lord, we remember those who risked their lives and even died in those places where madness ruled the world and evil sought to overwhelm good. We remember those we know or knew and those whose very name is lost.

Because of their sacrifice, may we renew our fight against cruelty and injustice, against prejudice, tyranny, and oppression. Still we cry to God out of the darkness of our divided world.

Let not the hope of men and women perish. Let not new clouds rain death upon the earth. Turn to yourself the hearts of rulers and of peoples, that a new world may arise where men and women live as friends in the bond of your peace.

who is the Prince of Peace, In Jesus’ name, who is the Prince of Peace, we pray. Amen.

*Hymn God of the Ages # 262 in the Blue Hymnals

God of the ages, whose almighty hand Leads forth in beauty all the starry band Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies, Our grateful songs before Thy throne arise.

Thy love divine hath led us in the past; In this free land by Thee our lot is cast; Be Thou our ruler, guardian, guide and stay; Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.

From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence, Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense; Thy true religion in our hearts increase; Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.

Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way, Lead us from night to never-ending day; Fill all our lives with love and grace divine, And glory, laud, and praise be ever Thine.
