Plagiarism and MLA Citations 9th Bim 1, Wk. 1

What is plagiarism?

What is plagiarism? According to the MLA Handbook, plagiarism is “using another person’s ideas, information or expressions without acknowledging that person’s work” (66).

Types of plagiarism You directly quoted, changed around only a few words and phrases, or changed the order of the original’s sentences. You copied text and pasted it into your paper without quotation marks and without citing the source. You presented facts or paraphrased someone’s wording without acknowledgement (including using someone else´s examples) You bought or otherwise acquired a research paper and handed in part or all of it as your own.

Consequences of plagiarism Colleges and universities – fail assignment, fail course, sometimes expulsion Legal – fines or jail time (depending on severity of plagiarism) Institutions – Loss of job Seran – Zero, Suspension

Plagiarism? Yes or No. My tutor rewrote my thesis statement to change it from a summary to something that opens up an argument. YES – it was not written by you!

How do I avoid plagiarism? Cite (or make reference to) your sources! Use quotation marks Use parentheses to indicate the name of the autor and page number

When do we cite our sources? Using someone else´s idea in a quotation Using someone else´s particular wording, phrase or language Paraphrasing or summarizing someone else´s ideas

When do we NOT cite our sources? Common knowledge – a fact or phrase that is generally known without research Example: Donald Trump is the president of the US. Example: You can’t judge a book by its cover.

Example John F. Kennedy was elected President of the United States in 1960.

Practice Quote: When enough years had gone by to enable us to look back on them, we sometimes discussed the events leading to his accident. I maintain that the Ewells started it all, but Jem, who was four years my senior, said it started long before that. He said it began the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out. Source: To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, page 3 Which citation is NOT correct? Jem and Scout argue about how Jem had his accident (Harper Lee, 3). On page 3 of Lee´s novel, Scout remembers how she and her brother Jem “sometimes discussed the events leading to his accident.” “Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out” (Lee 3).

From George Orwell´s novel 1984 on page 11: (Describing The Ministry of Truth) The Ministry of Truth—Minitrue, in Newspeak [Newspeak was the official language of Oceania.]—was startlingly different from any other object in sight. It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up, terrace after terrace, 300 meters into the air. From where Winston stood it was just possible to read, picked out on its white face in elegant lettering, the three slogans of the Party: WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
