MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN AKSARAY TAKAG, 2015 MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN AKSARAY Gülden GÖK, Özgül MESUTOĞLU, Oğuzhan GÖK Aksaray University, Department of Environmental Engineering , Aksaray, Turkey E-mail: ozgulcimen@gmail.com INTRODUCTION Resulting from People's activities is solid waste (garbage) amount and type, the increase of the population and needs, is increasing reasons such as advances in technology. In recent years the most common approach used for the storage of municipal solid waste is the use of storage space. In Aksaray city, there are a lot of economic activities such as industry, the service sector, scientific research and tourism and these activities also contribute to the amount of municipal solid waste. This study, about the management of the landfill area in Aksaray contains information about the current situation. Location map of Aksaray Location of Aksaray solid waste landfill INFORMATION ABOUT SOLID WASTE LANDFILL In 108 000 m² area 910 000 m³ constitutes the solid waste storage reservoir. The landfill has prefabricated administrative facility buildings, 1 leachate collection pool, 60 tons truck scale, 250 kVA generator, 1 trash compactor, 1 backhoe contractor and 1 truck. The landfill space has started to operate in July 2007. The field is planned to executing up to 2020. Field is used in case of two lots. The landfill is created with dump of waste, laying, compacting and every 5 meter height of 1 meter soil spread as interlayer. The garbage (solid waste) until 26 m of total height of the field is planned to continue the dump. Total solid waste was determined 27 600 and 69 350 tone/year while population of Aksaray city increasing from 366109 to 384 252 person in 2007 and 2014 respectively. According to this information solid waste amount was determined as 0.49 kg/person.day in 2014. The characterization of solid waste from the plant for 2014 The type of waste Percentage Nonhazardous metal waste 5.58 % Safe glass waste 8.00 % Paper recycling 2.10 % Cardboard waste 9.99 % Plastic waste 17,87 % Safe wood waste 5.50 % Textile-leather waste 5.61 % Organic waste 45.35 %. Aksaray solid waste landfill Impermeable base of Aksaray solid waste landfill Recycling wastes have low percentage in solid wastes of landfill area, the reason for this that the wastes are collected by a licensed waste recycling company in Aksaray. The floor of landfill was made impermeable materials and leachate is collected with pipes line on the floor area in the landfill. Leachate is collected in a tank. Then, the collected water is sprayed on top of the landfill, because the area of the waste to increase the biogas production should be moist. A vertical flue gas collected by the system is transmitted to the power plants. The gas formed in the storage space can be collected of 80%. The gas consists primarily of methane (50–55 %), carbon dioxide (30-33 %), hydrogen sulfide (0.9-1.0 %) and oxygen (0.6-1.0 %). On average, 1 MW of energy per hour is produced at the facility. These energy needs and is using in the facility for remaining electricity is supplied to the local power company. AKSARAY SOLID WASTE LANDFILL FLOWCHART
