Macromolecule Investigation Lab

The Scenario In this lab, with the use of indicators as chemical detection tools, you will analyze a variety of foods for the presence of nutrients. Detection is based upon observing a chemical change that takes place most often a change in color. The problem: I lost the key that says what a positive test will look like. You will need to figure out a positive test. Then, determine which macromolecules are present, and PROVE to me, how you know they are present. You will be testing three indicators– two carbohydrates and a protein. The two carbohydrates indicators are for simple sugars and starch (large chains of sugar). Be careful, because the presence of one carbohydrate does not signify that the other must be present as well. You and your team will use your prior knowledge of what certain types of food are made of to design an experiment to answer the following questions 1) What are the characteristics (color change) of a positive reaction for each indicator? 2) What macromolecule does each indicator test for? 3) What macromolecule(s) is/are found in each of the 7 testing solutions?

Macromolecule Investigation Lab Today: Plan & design your experiment. You must have your procedures signed off by me. Include these things and notes on pg 9 in your packet. Title: Macromolecule Lab Procedures: Numbered List Data Table: You should create your own. What does a positive test look like? What is testing for simple sugar, complex carb, & proteins. You must explain HOW you know they are testing that and prove to me. What macromolecules are in each sample and why. 11/28 & 11/29 You will turn this in as a typed copy. It is not a full lab report, but a typed copy in full sentences.

LUGOLS (iodine) BENEDICTS BIURETS Macromolecule Experiment Samples: *You must wear GOGGLES!!! -Work as a team to develop a a. Lab Procedure (step by step list of what your team is going to go) b. Conduct experiment & collect data (make a data table) c. Write your results (Answer the 3 lab questions). Samples: Tofu Potatoes (Instant) Lemon-Lime Soda Crackers Sugar Egg Whites Milk LUGOLS (iodine) ADD 3 – 5 drops to sample BENEDICTS ADD 3 – 5 drops to sample, place in HOT water for 5 minutes. ALWAYS point test tube away from yourself. BIURETS ADD 3-5 drops to sample Questions to Answer: What does a positive test for each indicator look like? What macromolecule does each indicator test for? What macromolecule(s) are found in each sample?

Macromolecule Lab Write Up Due 11/28 & 11/29 It should be typed, and in full sentences. It should include: Name and Class Period Title Procedures – Sentences in a numbered list. Answer the 3 questions: What does a positive test for each indicator look like? What macromolecule does each indicator test for? What macromolecule(s) are found in each sample? The three questions should be short paragraphs that say what the answer is and explaining how they got there and KNOW that it is the answer using their experiments as examples.
