What Do I Do First? Look through some science fair books, or go on the Internet Both the MBES Library and the public library have science fair books to check out! Good sites to visit on the Internet: http://www.factmonster.com/spot/sciproject2.html http://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/project_ideas.shtml

Investigation vs. Model In the world of science, investigations are much preferred over a model. Judges like them better, too! An investigation involves a step-by-step procedure that begins with a purpose, and a hypothesis. In other words, it’s an experiment. If you decide to make a model, it must be very developed and an explanation must be given of exactly what you are trying to demonstrate with the model.

What is the difference? Examples of Models: The Solar System A Volcano An Insect Collection Examples of An Investigation: On Which Surface Do Mealworms Move Best? In Which Color Light Do Plants Grow Best? Is One Bridge Structure Better Than Another?

Journaling! It’s a great idea to start a journal when you start your project; It can be a folder or a notebook of some kind. Record information that you have collected about your topic of investigation. Note any references you use or experts you contact in the notebook. You will need to have 3 references (2 that are not internet-generated) listed in your bibliography.

GET TO WORK, BUT, HAVE FUN! Research Information On Your Subject Talk To Experts, Teachers, Parents Conduct The Experiment Or Build Your Model Record Your Findings In A Journal Create Your Backboard/Display Write An Abstract- Less than 250 Words

Purchasing Materials Before you set out to purchase materials, decide on an attractive color combination for the backboard and border, and one that will compliment the topic of your project. Needed materials for the display: Backboard, border, materials for lettering and matting A camera for pictures

What Will It Look Like? Title/Question Purpose Results Hypothesis Materials Photographs Conclusion Abstract Journal Procedure

Incentives to do a Science Fair Project Learning experience that will help you in future science classes Opportunity to excel at something for which you have a natural talent Opportunity to refine Common Core skills Extra credit opportunities Chance to move on to further competition and special awards
