Lesson 8 Vocabulary Conserving Restore Regulate Vegetarian Endangered Responsibility Attracted Adapted Unique Guardians

conserving Using only what you need of something and protecting it; not wasting something Saving, or conserving, natural habitats is a main goal of our national park system.

restore To return something to its original state Park workers restore harmed habitats by bringing them back to their original state.

regulate To control Managers regulate, or control, access to an area. Fewer people cause less harm.

vegetation Plants found in a particular area Many animals survive by feeding on the vegetation, or plant life, in a habitat.

endangered Threatened; for plants and animals, threatened with extinction Damaged habitats put endangered animals at risk of dying out.

responsibility A duty or job Humans have a duty, or responsibility, to preserve and protect wild habitats.

attracted Drew attention and captured interest Birds are attracted, or drawn to, habitats that can hide their nests from predators.

adapted Changed, to survive or fit into new conditions Gills are specially adapted features that let fish breathe in the water.

unique Unusual and special in some way Many habitats support unique plants and wildlife that are not found elsewhere.

guardians People who protect or take care of others One day some of these students may become guardians, or caretakers, of wild habitats.
