Living Space Lesson Two To identify and explore poetic techniques within a poem. To analyse the language and structure of a text to identify its meaning.

Review Last lesson we began to study Living Space by Imtiaz Dharker. Lets review your ARTWARS analysis to check our understanding. Follow along and add notes to your analysis.

The poet’s understanding http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00x4rbw http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zsctsbk (same clip, just a backup!)

Think, Pair, Share How does the poet’s analysis/discussion of her work add to your own?

Taking the discussion further... Let’s go back to our analysis and focus on the structure and style of the poem. Why do you think I chose these elements as the most important?

Structure and style Is the structure deliberate? What might it represent? The broken lines and uneven stanzas may represent the irregularities of the ‘crooked’ buildings she describes and how they are squeezed into the small spaces. This could also link to chaos and disorganisation within the living space she describes. The broken lines are an example of enjambment- the continuation of a sentence over a line-break. Why is this an effective technique?

What about themes and motifs? Theme- overall idea/message. Motif-an object or idea that repeats itself throughout a literary work. Religion and faith Fragility? Re-read stanza 3. What do you notice? What is the poet saying? And even dared to place These eggs in a wire basket, Fragile curves of white Hung out over the dark edge Of a slanted universe, Gathering the light Into themselves, As if they were The bright, thin walls of faith.

From ARTWARS to GCSE? Using your ARTWARS analysis, and our discussion, as a guide, write a response to the following: Compare ‘Living Space’ to another poem you have studied this year. Comment on the structure of the poem and the techniques used. You should also address: The purpose of the poems What you feel the poet’s possible intentions were in writing the poems (what are they trying to say?)
