Presentation transcript:

This was to shape the way Mother Teresa lived her life. Who Was Mother Teresa? Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, Macedonia on 26th September 1910. She was given the name Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Her family were deeply religious and were dedicated to the Roman Catholic Church. They did a lot to help the less fortunate in their community. This was to shape the way Mother Teresa lived her life. How Did She Become a Nun? Nuns often live together in a convent and devote their lives to God, which means they live without a lot of the things most of us take for granted. They give up a lot of their possessions, they cannot get married and they live to serve God and the people in their communities. In September 1928, aged just 18, Agnes left her home to travel to Ireland to become a nun.

Moving to Ireland She joined the Loreto Convent in Rathfarnam and was given the name Sister Teresa. How do you think she might have felt leaving home at such a young age to go to a foreign country?

The Mission in India The convent in Ireland sent Sister Teresa to India, to work as a missionary. On 6th January 1929, she arrived in Calcutta and made her way to Darjeeling. missionary – someone who is sent on a religious mission to promote their religion in a foreign country.

What Did She Do in India? She had wanted to become a teacher and began working at St. Mary's High School for Girls. The convent was dedicated to teaching the girls of some of the poorest Benagli people.

The Mission in India Sister Teresa learned both Hindi and Bengali in order to work in the school. As a teacher, she hoped to educate the girls to help to eliminate poverty.

How Did She Become Mother Teresa? Nuns had to take a series of vows (promises) to devote their lives to God and the church. In 1937, Teresa took her 'Final Profession of Vows'. This meant that she dedicated herself to a life of poverty, obedience and committed her life to God. She was given the title of 'Mother' and was then known as Mother Teresa. What Changed Her Life? In 1944, she became principal of the school and was loved by its many pupils due to her kindness and dedication to the girls and their education. However, she was still very concerned about the poverty on the streets in the city. Photo courtesy of (Peta_de_Aztlan@flickr.com) - granted under creative commons licence – attribution

Working in the Slums Mother Teresa spent six months doing basic medical and first aid training to prepare her for her new calling. Then, she went to work in the slums to help the people who were often uncared for and overlooked by the rest of society. How do you think Mother Teresa might have felt leaving the school and going to work on the streets with the poor, sick and homeless?

How Else Did She Help People? In December 1948, she set up a school for the poor and then, in 1957, she opened an orphanage for homeless and destitute children. Mother Teresa was disappointed that there was so little medical care for so many people on the streets. In 1963, she founded the ‘Missionaries of Charity Brothers' to provide medicine and health care to the poor.

What Happened to Mother Teresa? During the 1980s, Mother Teresa travelled around the world to helping others set up projects similar to her own. In the 1990s, her health began to deteriorate. In 1997, she returned to Calcutta – the place she considered to be her home.
